RETURN TO OFFICE FUELS THIRST FOR FITNESS

Over the last 18 months, the pandemic has seen us in and out of lockdown. We’ve been forced to change how we operate 9-5 as the lines between work and home life blur.

The stay-at-home orders have also had a lasting effect on our exercise habits. Gym closures saw us swap hydraulic machines for homemade chin-up bars and treadmills for the pavement.

But after returning to the office after months of strict measures, our thirst for full-service gyms has only grown.

According to new research conducted by RunRepeat, full-time office workers who were previously inactive have found a new fitness groove.

Surveying 2494 people, the study looked at how exercise habits changed after working from home during the pandemic and then returning to the office.

Dividing the study group into three categories: low frequency (1-2 sessions per week), moderate frequency (up to 3 times per week) and high frequency (4+ times per week), researchers noticed a huge shift in workers who typically didn’t exercise much.

The findings showed that after returning to the office, 59.52% of non-exercisers are exercising an average of 2.64 times per week.

Other key findings included:

  • People who exercised 1-2 times/week have increased exercise frequency by 125.93%

  • People who exercised up to 3 times/week have increased exercise frequency by 38.57%

  • People who exercised 4+ times/week have decreased exercise frequency by 14.16%

Study authors found that running was the major beneficiary of remote working, “given it was one of the easiest ways to be active when other options like gyms or team sports were no longer feasible during the pandemic.”

How are you looking to change your exercise habits when you return to the office?
