6 WAYS TO COMBAT WINTER SKIN

With the arrival of winter, it’s time to switch up your skincare routine with cool weather habits that will ensure you maintain that post-exercise glow season round. Dry, flaky skin and chapped lips come hand-in-hand with the cooler months, so having a winter beauty routine is essential. But for those who like to spend more time in the gym than out, their skin needs extra special attention.

Why? Well, whether it’s a spin class, time on the treadmill or a morning spent in the yoga studio, after every time you exercise your skin is left at its most vulnerable stage. You see, breaking a sweat allows you to release lots of nasty toxins (which is a great thing!), but it can also mean your pores are left open and exposed for when you step outside into the cold, brisk air. And not just this, sweat is also extremely drying to the skin once evaporated. So this combined with the usual effects of winter means one thing after a workout: irritated skin.

So, to ensure your beauty game is strong against the harsh elements this winter, take note of these six healthy habits you should include in your daily routine.

1. WASH YOUR FACE PRE AND POST WORKOUT

No matter what the exercise, it’s a really good idea to wash and de-grime before and after. This will ensure you remove all dirt and bacteria that can easily be absorbed into your pores while you work out and get trapped once you’ve finished, causing irritation and congested skin. If you don’t have time after the gym to wash, keep a stash of cleansing wipes in your gym bag to use when you’re on the run.

2. USE A FACE MIST

This won’t just cool you down instantly, but will leave your skin feeling fresh and revitalised, whilst giving your skin a quick moisture boost. So worth It.

3. MOISTURISE

Choose a good quality face and body moisturiser that is rich in hydrating and skin repair qualities. Before applying make sure your skin is completely dry and pay particular attention to areas like elbows, hands and the heels of your feet, which generally are a little tougher. You can also try buffing your skin once a week for 60 seconds with a scrub. This will also make a visible difference to dull, dry skin by removing dead skin cells and promoting renewal.

4. TRY TO AVOID MAKEUP

After a sweaty session in the gym, let your skin breathe and work that post-sweat glow. If you’re one that never goes without, try adding a smear of lip gloss and some clear eyebrow gel.

5. KEEP UP THE FLUIDS

While some can’t live without their daily caffeine hit, try to keep these types of beverages to a minimum during the cooler months as they can be deceivingly de-hydrating. Ensure you’re getting enough amount of water each day (at least 8 glasses) too. This will not only help with keeping your skin cleansed and hydrated, but will also help to keep your energy levels up and those Winter blues at bay.

6. GIVE YOUR SKIN A BOOSTING SUPPLEMENT

If you’re wanting to give your skin some extra TLC this Winter, try adding a fish oil supplement to your diet. Fish oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids that have excellent anti-inflammatory properties that will not only help with irritated skin and ageing, but help with hydration. These fatty acids are also found in oily fish like salmon, sardines and trout too.
